Psychological Services incorporating Equine, Nature and Canine therapies

From 1st February ‘21 online therapy sessions available only.

A broad range of evidence-based psychotherapies

Combining traditional room-based 'talking therapies' with Equine, Canine & Nature assisted therapies for positive, long-lasting results.

Equine Enlightenment offers a broad range of traditional psychological services, including assessment, formulation and NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence)  evidence-based psychological therapies.

Our broad range of therapies offer an alternative solution for clients who find it hard to open-up, talk, or trust, or would like to try something different to a ‘clinical’ setting. It encompasses a safe, containing way of supporting clients at their own pace.

Room Based Psychotherapy

Talking therapies can help you to implement positive change in most areas of your life. It offers a safe, confidential space to explore specific issues, relationships, childhood experiences, trauma and more. As with all our therapies, it is possible to work individually, in a couple or with your family.

We collaboratively make sense of your presenting symptoms using psychological theory and find tools to individually suit your needs. We take a pluralistic approach, which means that the therapeutic plan can draw on many psychotherapeutic modalities and may bring one or more of these into your therapy programme.

Equine Assisted Therapy

Facilitated psychotherapy interventions with horses have been scientifically proven to improve the psychological and physical well-being of individuals for centuries (e.g Bachi, 2012). As social mammals living in similar groups to humans, horses offer non-verbal emotional support. Equine assisted psychotherapy offers a powerful, yet gentle way of working with a qualified practitioner at your own pace.

Non-verbal, body-based exercises can be facilitated which increase self-esteem, self-awareness, emotion regulation, improved relationships, stress and anger management, and more. If you are looking for an alternative to traditional talking therapy then this is for you.

Canine Assisted Therapy

Dogs are fantastic at offering non-verbal reflections of what is happening for us in the moment. They are highly-sensitively attuned to our emotional states, creating another platform for increasing self-awareness. Whilst doing so, they are able to gently interrupt moments of overwhelming emotion and bring your awareness back into the moment.

This offers a space for new patterns of emotion regulation to develop, tools to utilise outside of sessions, and consequently to stop feeling saturated by the overwhelm emotions can sometimes bring.

Nature Assisted Therapy

The benefits of being in nature to physical health and psychological wellbeing have long been documented as positive (e.g. Harper, Gabrielsen & Carpenter, 2018). Nature helps us to ground ourselves and reconnect with our true selves.

According to Natural England (2016), nature assisted therapy can specifically reduce anxiety, stress, and depression. It also compliments a number of traditional psychotherapies, whilst also offering a space for healing and reflection.

"The horses and Philippa are amazing to work with and her therapeutic experience and knowledge of horses is impeccable! In comparison to regular counselling I have had, I have found this to be far more effective, and something I have really enjoyed. I would highly recommend Philippa and the wonderful horses to others and hope you all enjoy the experience as much as I have done!"
